(More customer reviews)I was looking for a triathlon top that I could swim in without a wet suit over it. This top was supposed to be breathable, water-resistant and have low drag. First, I noticed that as soon as I put it on I started to get really warm. To me, this was an indication that either it was not wicking/breathable enough or the material (Teflon and rubberized strips in places) were canceling out the breathability.
Second, the water-resistance is a joke. If you sprinkle a couple of drops on it they will roll off, but it will get wet if submerged. Finally, as far as the drag in the water goes, maybe the material is slick , but the neck line is too low and not tight enough against the chest. So when you swim fast it catches the flow and starts billowing making you feel like a baleen whale that just swallowed a school of fish.
To be fair, none of the competitors' products that I tried (Pearl Izumi, De Soto, Orca) were any better with billowing. This wouldn't be a problem if you swim in a wetsuit, but then you wouldn't need an overpriced tank top either. And forget about trying to put them on over your wet body in T1!
I finally tried good old Nike pro-core compression sleeveless shirt (one size smaller than my usual) and couldn't be happier. It sticks to the body perfectly, the neck line is high above the collar bones and I haven't noticed any billowing even when swimming at full speed. It costs a fraction of any of the tri tops (esp. if you buy it at Marshall's) and if you want to make it extra slick in the water just spray it with ScotchGuard.
